All about Tyrosine

  • Tyrosine is one of the 22 amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. The body makes tyrosine from another amino acid called phenylalanine. The body uses tyrosine to make chemical messengers in the brain.
  • Tyrosine can be found directly in dairy products, meats, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, oats, and wheat.
  • Tyrosine is used in protein supplements to treat an inherited disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU). People who have this problem can’t process phenylalanine properly, so as a result they can’t make tyrosine.
  • For every 1 gram of protein in your diet, you should be getting 47 milligrams — 0.047 gram — of tyrosine, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine reports. For instance, the general protein recommendation is 56 grams a day for men and 46 grams for women. Based on these standards, men need 2.6 grams of tyrosine daily and women 2.2 grams.
