Ginger – Research suggests it could be good for migraine.

Ginger has been shown in research published in The journal Phytotherapy Research (1) to be as effective at managing migraines as the drug sumatriptan. The study evaluated the efficacy of ginger in the ablation of common migraine attack in comparison to sumatriptan. This is a drug which according to the NHS constricts bloodvessels in the brain which become enlarged and causes pain. 

The study was a double blind randomised trial of 100 patients who suffered from acute migraine (without aura). They received either the ginger powder or drug sumatriptan. The following parameters were measured; Time of headache onset and severity. The trial lasted for 5 migraine attacks for each patient and they were then asked to rate their satisfaction about the treatment they had received along with their willingness to continue with it after a month which.

Two hours after using either the drug or the ginger the mean (average) headache severity significantly decreased meaning the efficacy of ginger and the sumatriptan was similar.  The adverse effects from the two was also measured and were less for the ginger.
