All About Selenium

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, so helps protect the body from cell damage.  It helps to boost the immune system in fighting off infection.  Thyroid function also relies on selenium as it allows iodine to be used to produce thyroid hormones.

 

The RDA of Selenium is 55mcg and the SONA is 50mcg.

Low levels of selenium in the diet have been linked to heart problems and cancer.

Good food sources of selenium are; Herring, tuna, sardines, salmon, cod, lean beef, pork, chicken, calf liver, brazil nuts, walnuts, milk, cheddar cheese, cottage cheeses, eggs, oatmeal, brown rice, avocado and whole wheat bread
