All about vitamin D

The most common form of vitamin D is calciferol.  it is important to help maintain levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood and plays an important role in bone health as well as  recent research showing it plays a huge part in immunity (protection from autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis) and plays an unlikely role in diabetes. Research also shows it is an important factor in the low mood. It is also important for Muscle functioning and thyroid function.

The RDA  of vitamin D 5mcg and the SONA  is 500mcg  however research points towards 2000 IU daily being an appropriate level.

A lack of vitamin D can lead to Rickets,  and is associated with bone pain, muscle weakness, cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, tuna, eggs, emmental cheese, butter, cereals that are fortified with vitamin D, such as All Bran and Special K

Vitamin D is also made in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. As we live in the northern hemisphere and the weather hasn’t been great in the latter years there has been an increase in vitamin D deficiency throughout the UK.
